A mover’s checklist
Move out cleaning of the apartment
Move out cleaning of the apartment must be carried out before returning the keys and moving out. The next tenant should be able to move in without cleaning the apartment first, thus cleaning must be done thoroughly.
If the tenant fails to properly clean the apartment, it is within the lessor’s rights to charge the tenant for any cleaning expenses. The following should be taken note of when moving out of your apartment:
Kitchen
- Clean inside, outside and behind the fridge and the cooker
- Clean the cooker hood and its grease filter
- Clean the kitchen cabinets from inside and outside
- Clean the vent valve
- Melt and clean the freezer
- Plugging the in- and outlets of the dishwasher is the tenant’s responsibility. The tenant is liable for any damage caused by careless plugging of the dishwasher.
Bathroom and WC
- Clean the toilet and the sink
- Clean the floor drain and the drain trap
- Clean the vent valve
Floor and wall surfaces of the apartment
All floor surfaces must be vacuumed and washed. Remember to also clean the skirting. Any stains from doors and walls must be removed. Any wall stickers or decals must be removed.
Windows
Wash the windows. Take note of the weather. During freezing conditions, at least the interior surfaces should be washed and the spaces between windows cleaned.
Outdoor spaces and storage rooms
Clean the outdoor spaces belonging to your apartment. No items may be left on the balcony or in the front and backyards. Clean any storage spaces belonging to your apartment that you have been using during the tenancy.
An inspection of the apartment will be carried out after you have moved out, to ensure the cleanliness and general condition of the unit. If no faults or defects are found during the inspection, the security deposit will be returned to you in accordance with the lease agreement.
Normal wear and tear resulting from residency and the age of the apartment will be taken into account during the inspection. However, it should be remembered that a worn surface and a dirty surface are two different things.

Key return
After you have emptied and cleaned the apartment according to instructions, please return your keys to us. Return all keys you have received, and which have been made for you during your tenancy to our office, automated service point in Kallentori or you can leave them on the kitchen counter of the apartment. If you choose to leave the keys inside the apartment, please let us know by calling this number 040–181 7400 or via email at vuokra-asunnot@talohoito.fi. If the number of keys returned when moving out is less than the amount that was originally handed out to the tenant or if the tenant loses a key during the tenancy, the lock will be rekeyed at the tenant’s expense.
Security deposit
If all payments and requirements have been taken care of properly, the deposit will be returned to the specified account within a month of moving out.
Move-out inspection
A move-out inspection will be carried out on a pre-arranged date, to ensure the cleanliness and general condition of the unit. If no faults or defects are found during the inspection, the security deposit will be returned to you in accordance with the lease agreement. Normal wear and tear resulting from residency and the age of the apartment will be taken into account during the inspection.
The tenant who has moved out will be charged for detected defects:
- Uncleaned apartment/incomplete cleaning
- Broken built-in units, doors, other surfaces or other company property
- Company having to remove things left behind by the tenant to the apartment, storage, yard areas or balcony
- Renovations such as painting or wallpapering that have not been approved by the lessor
- Damage caused by pets
Other things to remember!
- Remember to cancel your electricity contract
- Submit a notice of change of address to Posti and Digital and population data services agency
- Contact your insurance company and transfer your insurance for your new home
- Turn off the apartment’s broadband
A good rule of thumb is to clean the apartment in a way that you yourself could happily move into it!
